Super Bowl and Salmonella—Know what not to serve your game-watching family and friends
An investigation into a large Salmonella outbreak is underway as the nation counts down to Super Bowl Sunday. While the investigation into the root causes of the outbreak continues, several types of Italian-style deli meats (including salami/salame and Hot Sopressata Calabrese) were recently recalled. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than 200 people from 42 states and the District of Columbia have become ill from Salmonella Montevideo.
What you can do
- Check your kitchen including the refrigerator and freezer to see if you have any of the products described in the recall release. Compare packages with these pictures of the product labels:
- If you have purchased any of these products, throw them away immediately. You may dispose of them by putting them in a plastic bag and place in a sealed trash can to prevent people or animals, including wild animals, from eating it. Another option is return them to the place of purchase.
