Dr. Michelle Annette Smith
Senior Policy Analyst, Office of Food Safety, Produce Safety Staff, FDA
Michelle currently plays a leadership role in drafting the upcoming proposed rule on safety standards for produce. She led the development of FDA’s “Guide to Minimize Microbial Food Safety Hazards for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables” (GAPs guide) as well as the development of FDA’s 2004 Produce Safety Action Plan.
She is an internally recognized expert, providing policy and technical support to numerous projects advancing guidance, education/outreach, and research. She provides technical assistance to FDA and its stakeholders in responding to foodborne illness outbreaks associated with fresh produce, and promotes open lines of communication during outbreak investigations.
Michelle has worked at FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Science since 1991. She holds a Ph.D in Food Science and Technology, an MS in Crop Physiology, and a BS in Soil Science.
